The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
