Administration Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
